Australian Open Quarter-finals recap: thrilling matches set stage for semis

Tuesday’s quarter-final matches at the Australian Open delivered plenty of drama and excitement, with top players advancing to the semi-finals.

Men’s Singles:

Alexander Zverev pulled off a stunning comeback to reach his first Australian Open semi-final, defeating Tommy Paul 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1. Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam runner-up, will face his toughest challenge yet against 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic secured his 50th Grand Slam semi-final appearance with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Carlos Alcaraz. He’s now just two wins away from claiming his 11th Australian Open title and 25th Grand Slam title overall.

Women’s Singles:

In a major upset, Paula Badosa stunned Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. Badosa’s victory ended Gauff’s impressive 13-match winning streak.

Aryna Sabalenka also advanced to the semi-finals, becoming the second player in 15 years to reach three consecutive Australian Open semi-finals. She defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, setting up an exciting semi-final showdown.
Sabalenka has now won 19 matches in a row at Melbourne Park and will face her good friend, No. 11 seed Paula Badosa.

The last woman to win the Australian Open three straight years was Martina Hingis from 1997 to 1999.

The Australian Open 2025 men’s singles tournament has reached its climax, with the top four contenders facing off in two thrilling semifinal matches on Friday, January 24, at Melbourne’s iconic Rod Laver Arena.
