Minority Leader in Parliament and Patron of the Volta Region Students’ Association of the University of Ghana (VORSA), Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has donated GH¢105,000 to cover the academic fees of 33 students of the university.
The presentation was held at the Minority Leader’s office in Parliament House on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
Making the presentation, the Effutu lawmaker described the gesture as a “helping hand” to encourage the beneficiaries to pursue their education with focus and determination.
“So young men and women, 33 of you, I just want you to know that I’m offering a helping hand. Take advantage of it. Learn, build capacity, and move on. Life has never been easy. It is rough. But with your determination, your faith in God, trust me, no danger can ensue,” he told the students, urging them to make the most of the opportunity.
Sharing his personal experiences, Afenyo-Markin recounted his struggles as a student at the University of Cape Coast and later at Buckingham University, where he worked night shifts in care homes to pay his fees. He encouraged the students to view the support not just as financial relief but also as motivation to transform their lives through education.
Quoting Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Weep Not, Child, he added: “The ravaging clouds shall not long possess the skies. Poverty and hardship will not always prevail.”
The 33 beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, describing the intervention as timely support in their academic journey.
