Cameroon edge South Africa 2–1 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash to reach the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals

Cameroon booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging South Africa 2–1 in a pulsating Round of 16 encounter on Sunday, January 4, in Rabat.

Suffocated, shaken, and at times stretched to their limits, the Indomitable Lions nevertheless stood firm and struck at the decisive moments.

Dominated for long spells by an enterprising Bafana Bafana side, Cameroon relied on efficiency and composure to secure victory.

South Africa set the early tempo, pressing high and creating clear chances in the opening 30 minutes. Goalkeeper Devis Epassy was called into action on several occasions, while South Africa’s lack of precision in front of goal allowed Cameroon to survive the early onslaught.

The turning point arrived in the 33rd minute when Junior Baptiste Tchamadeu capitalised on a rare opening, firing home to give Cameroon the lead and shift the momentum of the contest.

Revitalised by the breakthrough, Cameroon took greater control after the interval and doubled their advantage in the 47th minute.

Frank Magri Kofane rose to meet a cross with a composed diving header, dealing a heavy blow to South Africa’s hopes.

Bafana Bafana refused to surrender and were rewarded in the 87th minute when Evidence Makgopa pulled one back, setting up a tense finish.

Rabat held its breath as Cameroon came under renewed pressure, but Epassy remained resolute to see his side through.

Challenged but composed, dominated yet decisive, Cameroon held on until the final whistle.

The five-time champions will now face host nation Morocco in the quarter-finals on Friday, January 9, at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.
