The Black Queens of Ghana have started their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on a winning note after defeating tournament debutants Cape Verde 2-0 in their opening Group C fixture.
Ghana secured the victory on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, as they began their quest for a strong showing at the continental tournament.
Forward Doris Boaduwaa gave Ghana the perfect start, finding the back of the net just six minutes into the game to hand the Black Queens an early advantage.
The Queens continued to dominate proceedings, creating several opportunities before extending their lead in the second half when Cape Verde defender Eleia Katy Pereira Vieira scored an own goal in the 54th minute.
The result gives head coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s side three valuable points as Ghana begin their Group D campaign with confidence. The team entered the tournament after weeks of preparations, including pre-tournament friendlies aimed at building cohesion ahead of the competition.
The victory also marked a difficult introduction to the tournament for Cape Verde, who are competing at the WAFCON for the first time in their history.
Ghana will now turn their attention to their second group game against Cameroon on Sunday, August 2, before concluding the group stage against Mali on Thursday, August 6. Both matches will also be played at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
