Former FC Barcelona boss, Quique Setien has been appointed as the new head coach of Villareal following the decision by Unai Emery to leave for the English side, Aston Villa.
Aston Villa appointed Villareal’s 2021 Europa League-winning coach on Monday after relieving Steven Gerrard from his post as coach of the club and the Yellow Submarines have responded swiftly to secure his successor.
Villareal made Setien’s signing official in a statement that read, “Villareal FC have reached an agreement with Quique Setien for Santander-born coach to take charge of the Yellows for the remainder of the current season and the entirety of the following one.”
According to the statement, the contract signed will run until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Setien has been out of work after getting fired by Barcelona in the 2020/21 season following the 8-2 trashing by Bayern Munich in the Champions league.
The 64-year-old before that coached Real Betis and Las Palmas, among other clubs.
Villareal currently sits at seventh position in La Liga after winning five of their 11 games this season with Setien set to be on the touchline for his first game against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday in the Europa Conference League.
