The University of Ghana’s Career and Counselling Directorate (UGCCD) has raised concerns about students not fully utilizing the support services available to them.
This follows an initiative to sensitise students on its core mandate and the wide range of support services it offers to aid career development
Speaking to Univers News, Tabitha Mensah, a representative of the Directorate, stressed that their work goes beyond issuing internship letters.
According to her, students who make use of the Directorate’s services are able to figure out their career paths more easily.
“Beyond giving internship letters to students, the Directorate administers psychometric tests that students take to help you decide the career path that you are most likely to follow and get to know more about yourself as an individual,” she said.
She also mentioned that the Directorate runs Curriculum Vitae (CV) clinics to help students put together strong CVs, even if they don’t already have one and also runs a career development and leadership course
“We run CV clinics the last Friday of every month, where you don’t have to have a CV before you come. We will teach you how to put a good CV together, and also we have the Professional 360 course that has to do with career development and leadership.” she explained.
Tabitha expressed disappointment over students ignoring job and internship opportunities shared through email.
“We send job adverts and part-time internships through students’ emails, and students don’t like reading,” she said.
She encouraged students to take advantage of the available services to better prepare for life after school.
To make services more accessible, the Directorate has set up satellite offices at key locations across campus, including near Kingdom Books and Stationery and at Akuafo, Volta, and Jubilee Halls.
