The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the successful completion of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
The exams commenced on August 5, 2024, with the Visual Art Project work and concluded on September 20, 2024, involving a total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 schools across the country.
During this year’s examination, WAEC implemented rigorous monitoring strategies in collaboration with various security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, National Intelligence Bureau, and the Ghana Education Service.
While many supervisors and invigilators adhered to examination protocols, a monitoring report of examination irregularities released by WAEC has raised concerns about the integrity of the process.
The report indicates that several infractions were observed during the examination period. These included photocopying answers and distributing them to candidates, hiding foreign materials on candidates within examination halls, and smuggling mobile phones into examination halls by both candidates and teachers.
Additionally, some individuals wrote answers on boards for candidates to copy, while others used projectors to display answers and took snapshots of exam questions with mobile phones to post on social media.
In response to these infractions, WAEC has vowed to take appropriate actions against any examination officials and stakeholders found culpable.
The Council has also emphasized its commitment to ensuring credible examinations despite the challenges faced this year
WAEC expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders who reported potential cheating activities during the examination, reaffirming the importance of collective vigilance in maintaining the examination’s integrity.
The Council also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Ghana Police Service, the National Intelligence Bureau, National Security, and other concerned citizens for their role in safeguarding the examination process.
