Plans for the one-week observance of highlife legend Daddy Lumba have taken a new turn, with the venue shifted from the University of Ghana Stadium to the historic Black Star Square in Accra.
The announcement comes after the La State Council issued a reminder of its annual ban on noise-making within the La Traditional Area, effective from August 11 to September 5. Since the University of Ghana Stadium falls within that jurisdiction, the development has sparked public speculation that the directive may have influenced the relocation.
In a press statement released by the La Homowo planning committee, the La State Council reminded the public of its annual ban on noise-making, which runs from August 11 to September 5. The University of Ghana Stadium, situated within that jurisdiction, therefore became unavailable for the ceremony.

The late Daddy Lumba’s funeral planning committee, via a press release in a social media post on Daddy Lumba’s radio station, DL FM, on 28th August, 2025, relocated the event to Independence Square, a site already associated with the late musician’s memory. Just weeks ago, the same grounds hosted a candlelight vigil where thousands of fans gathered in his honour.
Daddy Lumba’s funeral planning committee, however, emphasised that the decision was taken in good faith and assured fans that the change would not affect the scale or spirit of the observance and reassured mourners that all planned activities would go ahead as scheduled despite the switch.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciate the continued support of fans and well-wishers,” the family said.
The relocation adds another layer of symbolism to the observance. Black Star Square, a national landmark tied to moments of unity and remembrance, will now serve as the stage for Ghanaians to celebrate the enduring legacy of Daddy Lumba.
