The Ghana Police Service says it has gathered intelligence that some persons who want to participate in the demonstration being organised by Democracy Hub want to engage in lawlessness.

The police, in a statement, said its intelligence has revealed the demonstrators want to engage in acts that have the potential to jeopardise the peace, security, law, and order in the country.

The police said some of these lawless acts include defying the order of the court pertaining to the demonstration and also defying all directions of the police that are in line with the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

The rest are wielding weapons (firearms) and wearing bulletproof vests and helmets, attacking MPs and other state officials, attacking police officers in the discharge of their duties, and attacking critical installations, including the seat of government and electric power installations.

The police stated that the members of the demonstrators are being encouraged to get catapults and stones ready, use motorcycles to create chaos on the roads and inconvenience the travelling public, and storm business centres to cause mayhem, among others.

It has therefore asked the organisers to advise their members and all those who will participate to rescind their decision or the ale would deal with them ruthlessly.

“We would like to call on the organisers of the protest to caution their members against these unlawful acts, desist from any attempts to disturb the peace, and abide by the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) and all other laws in the country since they will be held responsible for any breaches of the law.

We would also like to assure the public that the police have put in place sufficient measures to handle any security situation that may arise. We therefore call on the good people of this country to support the police to maintain law and order, ensure security, and preserve the peace of our beloved country.”
