The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana convened an emergency meeting today with UGSRC aspirants and the Office of the Dean to address the ongoing conflict between the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Dean of Student Affairs regarding the SRC electoral process.

This intervention follows allegations by the EC that the Dean interfered in the election by showing favoritism towards certain candidates.

In response to these accusations, the Dean organized a vetting on Saturday, August 3, 2024. However, the EC denied the validity of this vetting and announced a new date for August 20.

During the meeting, which included the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean and Vice Dean of Students, University Legal Council, UGSRC Chief Justice, all vetting panel members present, the Electoral Commissioners, and all aspirants, it was determined that the vetting conducted by the Dean of Students was invalid due to constitutional concerns raised by some aspirants and panel members.

To resolve the issue, a new vetting will be held on August 11, 2024 at 6 pm. This vetting will be live-streamed on the Commission’s website, with the venue to be announced soon.

The vetting panel will remain unchanged except for the EC Chair, who has voluntarily stepped down from the process due to the allegations against him. The deputy EC will now handle the vetting process.

All parties are hopeful that this resolution will restore confidence in the SRC electoral process and ensure a fair and transparent election for all candidates.
