Ghana’s 24-year-old swimming sensation Harry Stacey failed to get past the heats in the 100m swimming freestyle event at the Olympic Games in France.
Stacey, who was making his maiden Olympic bow, featured in heat 4 and managed to finish in a time of 51.12s.
Stacey’s finish earned him seventh place amongst the 8 athletes who featured in heat 4, with Uruguay’s Las Antoniou wining the heat in 50.35s.
Despite performing below expectations in his debut Olympics, Stacey (who will be 28 at the next Olympics) has his sights set on the next edition.
I’m not too mad at the performance but wasn’t my best, building block for the future, he said
There’s been just the learning experience and, definitely, building block for the future, hoping to come back for the next Olympics. And, I’ve learnt a lot already, so just looking forward to the next four years and train hard, he added.
24 athletes with the fastest qualifying times automatically advanced to the semifinals, with Stacey’s time putting him out of contention.
Stacey, whose personal best stands at 50.57s in the 100m freestyle, was the first Ghanaian to compete at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games, with high-jumper Rose Amoniwaa Yeboah set to feature next on August 2.
