The University of Ghana has announced a significant overhaul of its directory structure, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and strategic alignment.

The reorganization has resulted in an increase in the number of directories, with some existing units elevated to directorate status and others renamed or restructured.

Speaking at the launch of the University of Ghana Strategic Plan for 2024-2029, Pro-vice Chancellor for Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare presented on revised statutes and a Manual on Human Resource Management and Administrative Policies and Procedures; he also noted that some directorates have been created and some renamed.

Key among them is, the Research and Innovation Directorate (formerly Office for Research, Innovation and Development and Legal Affairs Directorate (formerly Office of Legal Counsel) while the Sports Directorate is now renamed the Sports and Wellness Directorate.

“One of the changes in the status is the list of directories. So, we have had an increase in the list of directories. Some existing units have become directories, and some directories have been renamed or restructured. We still have academic affairs directorate, same as the Finance Directorate and Internal Audit Directorate. Office of Legal Counsel is now the Legal Affairs Directorate. We now have a Risk Management Directorate. Public Affairs is still there. We still have the Health Services Directorate. Our Sports Directorate has been restructured and renamed the Sports and Wellness Directorate.”

Prof. Awandare revealed that the university has implemented significant decentralization reforms, empowering its colleges to take charge of key processes such as admissions, matriculation, graduation, fee collection, student registration, examinations, and research grants management, while also decentralizing procurement and legal services.

“Another significant aspect of the new status is to try to decentralize our operations further. And this is in keeping with formalizing and integrating the collegiate system into the status. So certain university processes have now been decentralized. So, colleges have been empowered to do admissions matriculation and graduation.”

“Colleges would collect fees and do student registration. Of course, examinations and grades would be done at the college level. Research and grants management has now been decentralized to the college level. But ORID, or now the Research Innovation Directorate, will continue to be an option for individuals who want their grants managed there. In addition, procurement will be decentralized as much as possible. Legal services will be provided at the college level, subject to availability of personnel.”
