Ghana’s National 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, stormed to a 10.05s season’s best finish to annex gold at the Motonet GP meet earlier today in Finland.

Azamati’s sensational ran was the first time in two years he had come close to the 10.05s mark, being saddled with recurring injuries in the last 18 months.

The 100m sprinter kick-started his outdoor season at the African Games, running 10.54s, 10.41s and 10.45s in the final of the meet.

However, the former University of Ghana student is on course to book an Olympic qualifying spot via ranking, with a surge in recent performances – running in a season’s best time of 10.14s at the Pavo Novo meet three days prior.

Poland’s Dominik Kopec came 2nd in 10.09s, while Finland’s Riku Illuk placed 3rd in 10.26s, finishing behind the unstoppable Azamati.

Azamati, who was a part of Ghana’s quartet that secured Olympic qualification in the 4x100m at the World Relays in Bahamas last month, is gunning to participate in his second Olympics after featuring in the last edition in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu is the only athlete to qualify for an individual event at the forthcoming Olympics after an impressive 20.12s ran for South West Florida in the 200m at the NCAA championship final.

Azamati’s sensational finish puts him in contention, via ranking, to make it to the Olympic Games.
