The Blacks Stars of Ghana squared off against the Lone Stars of Liberia in an enthralling encounter as part of Ghana’s preparations towards the African Cup of Nations 2024 (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
The friendly fixture took place today in Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium despite a heavy downpour prior to the game which adversely affected the quality of the pitch and the number of spectators present.
The Black Stars Head Coach, Chris Hughton made several changes to the line up that won against Central African Republic (CAR) in Kumasi.
Abdul Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah (both of Medeama Sc), Stephan Ambrosius of Hamburg and goalkeeper Richard Ofori were among new faces brought into the starting line up. The Medeama pair made their debut on the national team, whereas Richard Ofori made his long awaited return to the Black Stars after a long lay off.
Right to the Dream Academy graduates, Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah were on the scoresheet for two of Ghana’s three strikes, where the latter registered an assist after setting up Mohammed Kudus with a narrow cross.
Palace’s Player of the Month of August, Jordan Ayew finalised the score by netting the last goal to seal victory.
Liberia on the other hand were able to register a consolation goal through Divine Rosevelt Teah at the closing stages of the game, which prevented Ghana from keeping a clean sheet.
The win against the men from Monrovia extends the unbeaten run of new Head Coach, Chris Hughton, with the former Brighton gaffer yet to be defeated after five games.
After the game, the veteran tactician revealed that the game offered him an opportunity to try different tactics which could be utilized in the nearby future.
“Today’s setup gives me the opportunity to think about possible formations in the future for the Ghana Black Stars,” Coach Chris Hughton said.
Ghana will take on Mexico and the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) Men’s Team in their next international friendlies in October, before proceeding to lock horns with Madagascar in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November.
