The Confederation of African Athletics Senior Championship, has come to a climax at the Stade de Kengue in Lome, Togo with team Ghana claiming 24 mecdals.
The Championship which took place from July 6 to July 9, saw team Ghana making positive strides by taking first place in the medal standings with 24 medals at the 14-nation competition.
Team Ghana’s 24 medals comprised of 14 Gold, 8 Silver and 2 bronze medals.
At the competition, which featured nations like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Benin, Sierra Leone, Niger, Liberia, and others, Team Ghana was among the best performers.
Ghana’s quartet came 1st in the 4x100m women in a time of 46.08sec, while the men won silver in a time of 39.71. And in the mixed-relay Ghana quartet came 1st in the 4x400m mix relay with an impressive time of 3:24.81 to win Gold.
Barnabas K. Aggerh and Sarfo Ansah came 1st and 2nd in the men 100m finals with a time of 10.40sec and 10.49sec respectively to win Gold and Silver. And in the women’s event Sandra K. Asibuo and Janet Mensah finished 1st and 2nd in the women 100m finals to win Gold and Silver for Ghana.
Raymond French (45.72s PB) and Solomon Diafo( 45.85s) came 1st and 2nd respectively in the men’s 400m finals
Ghana was also dominant in the long distance events after Ishmeal Arthur, Bassit Afful and Aziz Mohammed of the University of Ghana won gold in the men’s 10000, 5000 and 1500 races respectively.
Naomi Addo in the women’s 5000m won gold for Ghana.
Team Ghana’s successes was not only limited on the track as Benjamin Nimo won silver in the men’s javelin throw Aba Sam came 2nd in the women Long jump with a PB to win silver for Ghana. Rejoice Agbewodie came 1st in the women javelin with a throw of 44.08m to win Gold.
Ghana’s success story at the CAA Championships will bolster the team’s confidence ahead of the African Games, which will be held in Accra from March 8 – March 24.
