Co-hosts USA beats Bosnia to progress to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup

The United States of America booked its place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the first half and had been the standout performer before receiving a straight red card in the 64th minute for a challenge on Tarik Muharemović.

The USA, however, held firm under pressure and sealed the win late on when Malik Tillman produced a superb free-kick in the 82nd minute to double the lead and secure qualification.

The Americans dominated the early stages of the match, with Balogun and Christian Pulisic leading several attacking moves that kept Bosnia and Herzegovina pinned in their own half.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead earlier when Balogun’s effort was ruled offside, before Pulisic also had a goal disallowed for offside as the pressure mounted.

Their breakthrough eventually came just before half-time, when Balogun finished clinically to give the USA a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The game shifted after the restart when Balogun was dismissed for serious foul play, leaving Mauricio Pochettino’s side to defend their lead with a man down.

Bosnia pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but the American defence remained disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack.

Tillman’s moment of brilliance came eight minutes from time, curling a stunning free-kick past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory marks a significant milestone for the United States, ending a long wait for a World Cup knockout win and keeping alive hopes of a deep tournament run on home soil.

The USA will now face Belgium in the Round of 16.
