Junior Common Room President of the Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana,Paul Anim Inkoom has debunked claims of members of the hall being perpetrators of violent clashes on campus.
Paul Anim Inkoom and some other JCR executives who spoke on GTV’s Breakfast Show described Commonwealth as a peaceful hall that does not indulge in violence as speculated.
Commonwealth Hall is the most peaceful place in the university, someone can wear anything of Sarbah and come to Commonwealth and nothing will happen to the person because we are peaceful and we cherish peace a lot. He argued.
Paul Inkoom however called for a broader consultation in finding lasting solutions to the violent clashes.
It is about time we found the cause of these clashes and we have to sit and dialogue.
We have to make broader consultations.
Further speaking the JCR president touted the hall achievements including producing more prominent people in the country.
One thing that defines us is, we are peaceful people and we are very unique in terms of how we carry ourselves and so this has been a way that has assisted us to provide leaders for the country, national assets. When you look at the structures of Ghana, we have these former presidents, we have produced a Chief Justice and we have a lot of MPs.
BACKGROUND
There has been a series of violent clashes between residents of Commonwealth hall (Vandals) and Mensah Sarbah hall (Vikings) over the years.
A recent of this kind happened during the celebration of the Mensah Sarbah hall ‘Sarbahfest’on Friday, August 5, 2022.
This incident led to severe injuries and damage of properties. One of such is the missing bust of John Mensah Sarbah which is yet to be retrieved.
In resolving these violent clashes, the Hall Master and Senior Tutor of Commonwealth Hall were surcharged and laid off from duties by the University Council due to their insufficient willingness and ability to hold students of the hall accountable for their actions in the recent violent clashes.
However, measures have been put in place by the Management of the University to identify the perpetrators.
