Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has had a tumultuous managerial career, with four sackings in just four years. Here’s a breakdown of his coaching stint and the reasons behind his departures.
Derby County (2021-2022)
Rooney’s managerial journey began at Derby County in the 2020-21 season. However, his tenure ended in disappointment as the club faced relegation to League One in the summer of 2022. Rooney informed the club of his decision to leave, citing the team’s relegation and the challenges they faced, including a transfer embargo and points deductions.
D.C. United (2022-2023)
Rooney’s second managerial stint was at D.C. United in Major League Soccer. He was appointed in July 2022 but left his role as head coach in October 2023. The team’s failure to qualify for the postseason led to his departure, with the club announcing that they had “mutually agreed to part ways” with Rooney.
Birmingham City (2023-2024)
Rooney’s third managerial appointment was at Birmingham City in the Championship. However, his spell lasted just 83 days, with the club sacking him in January 2024. During his tenure, the team slipped from sixth to 20th in the Championship, with nine defeats in 15 games.
Plymouth Argyle (May 25- Dec 31,2024)
Rooney’s latest managerial stint was at Plymouth Argyle, where he was appointed in May 2024. However, he was sacked after just one win in 15 games, with the club sitting bottom of the Championship. Plymouth had endured a nine-game winless streak, conceding the most goals in the league at the halfway stage.
We didn’t create enough chances and didn’t do enough to stop them scoring their goals,” he said.
Rooney’s managerial career has been marked by short-lived stints and disappointing results. Despite his glittering playing career, he has struggled to replicate that success in the dugout.
