Head coach of Ghana’s U-20 female team Yussif Basigi has indicated that he was pleased with his team’s performance following their emphatic win against Benin in their first game of the tournament.
The West African Football Union Zone B U-20 women’s tournament is ongoing in Kumasi and Ghana started the tournament on a bright note by beating Benin by three goals to nil.
Maafia Nyamekye scored the first goal of the game and later Substitute Mary Amponsah doubled the lead for the hosts in the 61st minute.
Stella Nyamekye’s spectacular free kick goal earned the black princesses three points which also secures them qualification into the next stage of the competition.
In group B, Nigeria thumped Niger by seven goals to zero to send a signal to other teams in the competition.
Black princesses head Coach, Yussif Basigi, in an interview with the media after the game indicated that his side heeded to his instructions and came out triumphant after squandering chances in the first half of the game.
“In every competition you must win if you want to advance to the next stage. so definitely we have to work all that we could to win. The motive of winning is to advance to the next stage because automatically we have already qualified to the next stage so that is our motive. We were in a hurry to score and that is why we had a lot of chances and we wasted them. In the second half I talked to them to take their time so that as and when the chances come we convert, which of course they did to perfection,” he said.
Ghana will play Ivory coast in their next game of the tournament before the knockout phase begins.
Expectations are high for the team to excel after demolishing Niger eleven goals to zero in a pre-tournament friendly at the Accra sports stadium.
