Residents of Volta Hall at the University of Ghana are grappling with a worsening water shortage, with taps running dry for days.
Speaking to Univers News, some residents lamented that the worsening water crisis is disrupting their routines, making it difficult to maintain hygiene, cook, or get to lectures on time, as they are forced to fetch water from outside the hall.
Others reported resorting to buying sachet water from vendors, adding an unexpected financial burden, while some rely on friends in other parts of the campus.
“This is something else. We are ladies, we make use of water a lot,” one student said.
“The tap goes off for two to three days, and even the poly tanks aren’t helping this time. We fill them today, and they’re finished the same day because everyone is in a hurry to get water to bathe and do other things. The school stakeholders , anybody should come to our aid,” another student said.
Another student described the crisis as “appalling,” adding: “Volta Hall doesn’t get water often, but this is very serious. I have a 7:30 a.m. class and have to wake up by six to look for water. Even then, I sometimes don’t get any, and I end up late for class.”
For some, even basic chores have become a burden. “Because of petty chores like washing dishes, I have to go outside the hall to fetch water,” a resident said. “This crisis is so serious that we even go outside just to get water to bathe and wash.”
Despite mounting complaints, hall authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Residents are calling for urgent intervention, including water tankers and backup storage systems.
