The President of the student representative council of the Kwame NKrumah University of Science and Technology, Frank Owusu has called on government to use dialogue in engaging the tertiary labour unions who are currently on strike in order for academic work to resume.
In an engagement with Univers News,Frank Owusu said the only way to end the impasse is to have an open discussion with members of the labour unions and government.
There should be dialogues, one thing I know for sure, they are lecturers are well meaning citizen of Ghana, who have spent time to build themselves,made sacrifices to get to where they are, so if they have conversation, it will do.
I believe that there should be conversations ,call them to the roundtable and have an honest and frank conversation with them.
Frank also said although school is not in session at his end , students are uncertain as to whether or not their examinations papers will be marked and their results released on time.
Ordinarily, when it comes to the university whenever the academic year comes to an end, the lecturers are supposed to mark the papers and then released the result, and we have the organisation of resit those who trailed in some courses or in all courses.
As we speak today, according to the academic calender,we are supposed to taking our resit papers from the 19th to the 2nd of December, and we don’t know as to whether or not the resit will be taking place because lecturers are on strike.
And from what we are told, they are not supposed to mark any papers at all because they are on strike
And so we are not certain as to whether resit will be coming up or not.
Meanwhile, President of the Student Representative Council of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Majesty Kwesi Asare says the industrarial action by the public Tertiary unions has halted the admission of new students into the institution.
According to him , the industrial action has forced the management of UPSA to extend the admission of level 200 and level 300 diploma students .
For upsa, if not for the strike were supposed to be on campus at this moment, even this month we were supposed to start admission for the level 200 top up, students I mean diploma students ,going to level 300 and all that
Unfortunately, for the strike we can have we can’t have it done or even we will do it, there has to be an extension.
Labour Unions in Public Universities have laid down their tools over what they describe as the government’s unilateral move to vary their conditions of service.
The Unions currently on strike include the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Senior Staff Association of Ghana (SSAG) and the Tertiary Association of Workers Union (TEWU). Ghana Association. of University Administrators.
