Ghanaian highlife musician Akosua Agyapong has called on parents, musicians, and stakeholders to promote and preserve the country’s rich highlife music heritage.

Speaking at the launch of the centenary celebration of highlife music in Ghana at the University of Ghana, under the theme “Highlife Unlimited: A Centenary Celebration of Ghanaian Popular Music,” Akosua Agyapong emphasized the importance of playing highlife music at home and in cars to help pass it on to the younger generation.

“We should play highlife in our cars, play it at home, and invite the youth to promote it,” she said.

The musician also highlighted the significance of preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage, saying, “Highlife is from Ghana; it’s for us. It’s ours. It’s not for anybody else.”

The year-long celebration, organized by the University of Ghana in partnership with the Global Arts Development Center, is a deliberate attempt to celebrate the roots of highlife music in Ghana, examine how it has evolved over the years, and champion its promotion—especially among the youth.

The celebration features a lineup of activities, including highlife musical concerts, roundtable discussions to acknowledge the contributions of legends who have played a major role in highlife music, public lectures, and a wide range of fun activities geared toward promoting highlife music across the country and beyond.
