Senior staff unions in Ghana’s public universities have suspended their nationwide strike following the government’s approval of a long-awaited welfare agreement.
The strike, led by the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), brought administrative and academic operations to a halt in recent weeks.
In a statement issued Thursday, SSA-UoG National Chairman George Ansong announced that the Ministry of Finance had formally authorized the implementation of the welfare package originally scheduled to take effect in November 2024. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has since directed all public universities to begin disbursing the approved benefits.
“After persistent advocacy, has are relieved that the government hast demonstrated goodwill by expediting these approvals,” Ansong stated. He urged all union members to return to work on Friday, May 23, 2025.
