Kabu Nartey, a legal activist and former University of Ghana School of Law representative at the General Assembly, has taken strong issue with the Dean’s decision to proceed with SRC vetting on August 3, 2024, without the Electoral Commission (EC).
Speaking on Campex on August 5, Nartey criticized the Dean for organizing the vetting after claiming the EC had ignored her directives.
Nartey contends that such interference by university management disrupts the SRC’s autonomy and breaches established protocols
“The UG Statutes, the UG Act, and the UGSRC Constitution are explicit about preserving SRC independence,” Nartey said. “Management should respect these frameworks and only intervene in true emergencies as defined by Section 38 of the UG Statutes.”
He stressed that the SRC Constitution clearly assigns the EC with the responsibility for overseeing elections, including vetting. “If delays or issues arise, the appropriate response is to address them through the General Assembly or to assist the EC in resolving the challenges,” Nartey added. “The Dean’s decision to conduct the vetting without the EC not only undermines the SRC’s authority but also flouts established procedures.”
Nartey’s remarks underscore the importance of maintaining proper institutional procedures to ensure transparency and fairness in student governance.
The PRO Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gordon Awandare convened an emergency meeting on Monday, August 5, 2024, to resolve the issue. After the meeting, the Dean’s vetting on Saturday has been invalided and a new vetting date, August 11, 2024, has been with the venue yet to be announced.
