The University of Ghana (UG) has officially unveiled the winning architectural design for its Students’ Experience Centre, a key initiative under the UG@75 Anniversary Legacy Projects. The ceremony, held on November 12, 2024, at the Cedi Conference Centre, marked a milestone in the university’s commitment to enhancing campus life and student experiences.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo launched the architectural competition to create a transformative space for students. Out of 11 competing firms, Atelier Architects emerged as the winners with a design that blended functionality, innovation, and aesthetics.
Prof. Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Chair of the competition jury, emphasized the importance of creating a space that meets students’ needs while being architecturally sound and visually appealing.
“We saw this as an opportunity to showcase a building that is not only architecturally sound but also aesthetically pleasing and capable of meeting the needs of students.”
Results of the Competition:
- 1st Place: Atelier Architects (843.2 points)
- 2nd Place: Argon Architects (705.44 points)
- 3rd Place: Spectra Architects (658.37 points)
The winners received cash prizes of GHS 1,382,400, GHS 691,200, and GHS 230,400, respectively. All other participants, except one disqualified firm, were awarded consolation prizes of GHS 64,000.
Architect S.M. Quartey, leader of the winning team, praised the University of Ghana for leading such an innovative project. He expressed hope that the initiative would inspire other institutions across the country to adopt similar practices.
“This initiative sets a remarkable precedent. It’s inspiring to see Legon, as Ghana’s premier university, pave the way for innovative projects that will beautify our cities and motivate excellence across the industry.”
While congratulating all the participants, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amfo emphasized the overarching vision of the project, highlighting that the goal is for University of Ghana students to graduate not only with academic qualifications but also as well-rounded individuals, equipped to positively impact society.
“Our first strategic priority is ‘Transformative Student Experience.’ We want our student s to come here and not leave as they came.”
Chief Executive Officer of Eban Capital, Mr. Jim Amegah, pledged his organization’s full support for the project, highlighting its transformative potential.
“This project will foster job creation, resilience, and equip students with skills for the future. Eban Capital is fully prepared to mobilize the necessary resources to ensure its success.”
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including Prof. Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Director of Institutional Advancement, representatives from the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA), and members of the UG@75 Planning Committee.
The Students’ Experience Centre is envisioned as a transformative space, aligning with the university’s strategic priority of creating a vibrant and enriching environment for its students.
The project, which is expected to be completed within two years, will feature a variety of state-of-the-art facilities, including satellite offices, expansive auditoriums with seating for 2,000 and 3,000 people, student lounges, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) center, cinema halls, and designated comfort zones, among other amenities.
