The University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) treasurer, Gideon Ohene, has emphasized the urgent need for University of Ghana students to adapt to the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, especially as it becomes central to financial analysis, accounting, and decision-making across industries.

Speaking to Univers News after day one of the AI in Finance Bootcamp, he explained that AI is no longer limited to tech spaces, noting that students already rely on it for content creation, letter writing, design work, and research.

He stressed that with the world moving at what he described as a “fast AI-driven pace,” students must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to apply AI meaningfully in their financial activities.

Gideon revealed that this informed his office’s collaboration with Build AI Academy to organise the AI in Finance Bootcamp, a two-day training held on March 19 and 20 at the Conference Room of the SRC Union Building.

The programme is designed to expose students to the practical use of AI in budgeting, financial accounting, spreadsheet management, and data-driven decision-making. He added that Build AI is also developing a specialised AI bot to guide students through essential financial skills and real-world applications.

“When you look at how our system is growing, everything is becoming AI-driven. We create content with AI, we design with AI, and the world is moving faster. Students must catch up,” he said, noting that the programme aligns with the financial literacy mandate of his office.

The Treasurer further disclosed that participants will receive a one-month free subscription to the AI tool used during the bootcamp. He added that students who are interested can subscribe afterwards and continue using the package.

“And then also students will be able to get a one-month free subscription with the AI tool they will be using in the application of the course. After that, students who show interest can subscribe and continue using the package,” he said.

Gideon also highlighted that the initiative fits into his broader vision as Treasurer, a role he says is grounded in transparency, accountability, and integrity. He believes students must not only understand financial principles but also the technological tools shaping modern economies.

He noted that AI literacy is becoming a necessary part of financial education, adding that students need to stay informed about economic trends, digital tools, and emerging technologies that influence financial systems globally.

“Students should be equipped with the requisite skills in the financial world—knowing the right tools, understanding what’s happening in the economy, and using technology that will assist them in finding information in the financial space,” he said.

The AI in Finance Bootcamp forms part of ongoing efforts by the SRC to equip students with practical, future-ready skills as the digital landscape continues to transform traditional financial practices.
