Vice President of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), Ebenezer Derrick Gyampo Ayeh, has assured students that the SRC will engage campus transport unions to negotiate the recent increase in transport fares on campus.
This follows an increase in campus taxi fares from GH¢12 to GH¢15 at the commencement of the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year.
Speaking in an interview with Univers Business on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Mr. Gyampo revealed that the UGSRC was unaware of the fare increment until students raised concerns about the sudden hike.
He also disclosed that the planned engagement with the transport unions would seek to establish the reasons behind the increase.
“They are yet to communicate a date to us for a meeting so that we can engage them, reach a consensus, and keep students updated on the reasons for the sharp increase in transport fares,” Mr. Gyampo stated.
He further assured students that the SRC remains committed to protecting their welfare and will actively engage the unions to explore the possibility of a fare reduction.
“The University of Ghana SRC stands for the interests of students and is committed to ensuring that student welfare remains a priority. We will negotiate with the unions to see whether a reduction in the fares can be achieved,” he said.
