The University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) President, Richmond Larbi Ofori, has expressed disappointment over the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) recent directive instructing the University of Ghana to halt its fee adjustments for the 2025/2026 academic year and immediately revert to the previous fee structure.

In a statement addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, GTEC emphasized that all public universities must comply with the Fees and Charges Act, which prohibits institutions from unilaterally increasing fees without legislative approval.

Following the directive, the University is required to maintain the fee structure from the previous academic year while the matter undergoes further review.

Speaking on the Campus Exclusive show, Richmond Ofori clarified that reports of a 25% fee hike are inaccurate. He explained that the proposed adjustment represents an estimated 3.8% increase in development levies and dues, which are separate from academic fees.

“There has not been any 25% increment in fees. University management, first of all, would never approve a 25% increment in fees. What has been adjusted is the third-party fees. For instance, if I pay 6,000.00 cedis, the 200 cedis addition is just about 3.8%, which is not even up to 4% or 5% of the fees increment,” he said.

Meanwhile, GTEC has directed that fees be refunded to students who have already made payments for the 2025/2026 academic year, insisting that payments should not exceed the amount stipulated for the 2024/2025 academic year.
