The University of Ghana Parliament House has sworn in new members for the second time in the academic year.
This event took place at the first sitting of the second session of the 20th house at the SRC union building on 1st June, 2024.
The agenda for Saturday’s sitting included state of parliament address by the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon justice Alor, vetting committee report and the discussion of the budget for the upcoming 20th anniversary celebration of the house.
At the end of the sitting, Univers News engaged the new entrants on their thoughts and expectations as they join the house. Their responses were nothing but praises and hope for future proceedings and the opportunities to gain from the experience.
” I’m impressed by today’s sitting. I’m just hoping that [more people] will join because I just see this as a huge platform for us to build our potential.”
“Today’s programme was quite amazing. It exceeds what I was expecting. It’s good and it’s a bigger platform for we the students and all the participants for now. So I hope to get more experience day in, day out as we continue…”
Speaking to Univers news, the speaker of the House, Rt.hon. Justice Alor emphasized on the need to introduce fresh minds into the house, further announcing an anniversary celebration underway and an opportunity for mentorship for the members.
“We saw the need to inject into the House fresh ideas and perspectives. And we did that as parliamentary rudiments demand us to do.”
“And at the University of Ghana Parliament House, we are planning to celebrate our 20th anniversary. And in this anniversary celebration, we are actually going to ensure that we’re deepening democratic participation of young people here… we are also going to do proper network where we bring on civil society organisations, political and democratic players to be able to become better mentors to the young ones here at the University of Ghana Parliament House.”
The speaker admonished the new entrants to seize the opportunity to develop themselves democratically and politically.
“For the freshers or the new people that have joined our House, this is a very good platform to learn and then help yourself, develop yourself politically and then democratically… seize this opportunity and be intentional about your growth. And I know that in the end, [you] will not regret the decision [you] have made in joining the University of Ghana Parliament House.”
