UG vice-chancellor elected chair of ACU council

UG’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has been elected Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) for an initial two-year term, effective January 1, 2026.

The announcement was made via a post on the University of Ghana’s official Instagram page, which identified Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as the new Chair of the ACU Council.

Professor Amfo succeeds Professor Cheryl de la Rey, the immediate past Chair of the ACU Council, whose term ended on December 31, 2025. Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo was subsequently elected to lead the Council for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2026.

In her first official reaction to the election, Professor Amfo expressed deep gratitude for the global academic community’s confidence in her leadership.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by Council. At a time of profound global change, the ACU’s role as a connector of universities across the Commonwealth has never been more important. I look forward to working closely with the Secretary General, Council colleagues, and our diverse membership to General, Council. And ensure that higher education continues to serve as a powerful force for sustainable development and societal transformation.”

Professor Amfo joined the ACU Council on August 1, 2024, and has since distinguished herself as a committed and insightful member. She has made significant contributions to discussions and initiatives, demonstrating exceptional dedication to advancing the mission of the association.

A respected leader in global higher education, Professor Amfo brings over 24 years of experience in academia and university governance. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, she has spearheaded a bold agenda of innovation and institutional transformation. Beyond the university, she has also provided leadership across major regional and global higher education networks, contributing her expertise in multilateral collaboration, governance, and academic diplomacy.

In recognition of this achievement, the entire student body and the Voice of Legon, the number one station on campus, Radio Univers, extend their heartfelt congratulations to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.
