The University of Ghana Management has announced the cancellation of the much anticipated ‘Utopia’ event.

This was revealed in a statement dated 24 th May, 2023, released by the Office of the Dean of Student of Affairs, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen.

The ‘Utopia’ event was supposed to have been held from the 25th to the 27th of May, 2023, to commemorate African Union Day, which is also celebrated on 25th May every year. The intended venue for the event was the African Union Hall, otherwise known as ‘Pent’ on the University’s Campus.

The statement explained that the cancellation comes after the African Union Hall’s executives failure to follow directives which were given by the University Management earlier in April, when permission was sought by the hall executives to organise the event.

Some of these actions which were stated to have opposed the directives include the sales of tents for commercial activities and the slating of a music concert for Saturday night, on the 27th of May, 2023.

“It has come to the notice of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs that contrary to following the directives for the “UTOPIA” event, slated from 25th to 27th May, 2023, the executives of the Africa Union Hall have gone ahead to organize a Hall Weekend with the sale of tents for commercial activities and a musical concert stated for Saturday night. The “UTOPIA” event has therefore been cancelled with immediate effect due to the breach of the directives.”

The statement also went on to note that the ban on hall weeks is still in place.

“Be informed that the ban on Hall Weeks is in place.”

It must be noted that the Utopia event was not a hall week event, as clarified by the Africa Union Hall executives in an earlier statement dated 22nd May, 2023.

“We want to clarify that ‘Utopia’ is not a hall week celebration. We kindly request that individunls who have been creating artworks and advertising the event as a hall week celebration immediately cease from doing so. It is important to note that hall week celebrations are still banned and their prohibition remains in effect.”
