Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Right Rev Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante has charged the students and authorities of the University of Ghana to uphold moral education to resolve issues of indiscipline in the school.
Speaking at the National Union of Presbyterian Students- Ghana ( NUPSG) service on February 12 at the Central Cafeteria dubbed “Time with the moderator, he attributed the confrontation between Commonwealth and Sarbah to a lack of concentration on moral education in the University of Ghana.
“You can set up a big university with everything, put all the money you want into it, but all it takes is from someone from Commonwealth to go to Sarbah and the person would be chased down and there would be fight and they would destroy all the things because you did not concentrate on moral education. Until we take moral education seriously, everything will break down.”
He further urged students to make sure their moral education goes intended with their course of studies. He challenged students to live a moral life that is spiritually translated.
“The development of moral life is the most important thing for any human being, all other things come later. In the history of university education, the most important aspect of studies was the moral taught, now it has changed. When the bible says “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”, There is no way by which any country or institution can develop without concentration on moral issues.”
Also Speaking to Univers News, the Director for the Church life and Nurture for the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and former Graduate student Association president, Rev. Joshua Bossman Ohene, extended his good wishes to the University of Ghana as it continues to celebrate its 75th anniversary and expressed his nostalgic experience 10 years ago.
“I wish the University of Ghana very well in the celebration of its 75th Anniversary. Let me just say that during the 65th Anniversary of the University, I was here as a student and I was a member of the Publicity Committee around that time. So I’m just remembering with a nostalgic feeling. I hope the various committees that have been put together, will put their act together and will have a big celebration. I wish the University very well, long live the University of Ghana, my university.”
Right Rev Obiri Yeboah Mante made a GHC25000 cheque donation out of which GHC20000 is to support the NUPS-G’s acquisition of instruments and the remaining GHC 5000 to 10 final year students.
In return, the NUPS-G presented a GHC600 cheque to support the moderator’s club 100 vision.
In attendance was the GA Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Dr. A.N.O Kwakye, the clerk of the Presbytery- Rev. Isaac Quist, the National CLAN director- Rev. Bossman Ohene and members of the GA Presbytery campus ministry board, the NUPS-G National vice president- Mr. Derrick Twum and the GA Presbytery YPG Superintendent.
Right Rev Obiri Yeboah Mante is currently the 18th Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG). He is also the Chancellor of the Presbyterian University Ghana, Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, and a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of churches.
