The University of Ghana Tertiary Student Confederation of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON) has criticized the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, for allegedly neglecting students during a time of need.

The criticism comes after the University of Ghana announced a 20% increase in Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) for traditional halls of residence for the 2024/2025 academic year. The adjustment is aimed at addressing rising electricity costs and ensuring proper maintenance of residential facilities to provide students with optimal services and a conducive living environment.

Now, the increase in residential fees has caused alarm among traditional hall residents, who are now facing a higher financial burden to maintain their living conditions on campus.

According to the President of TESCON Appiah Prince Dankwah, the MP’s silence on the fee hike is not in line with his promise to be involved in student affairs and fight for their cause.

“The current MP for Ayawaso West Wogan, Honourable John Setor-Dumelo. We could all attest to the fact that when he was contesting for this position, any moment, like a big chance that he gets, he tries to criticise the former M.P. He goes and then blogs on the media and says a whole lot. What is exceptional this time? Like, what is wrong with this time?”

According to him, this is the time for the MP to prove he cares about students, just as he used his social media platforms to criticize the former MP, Honourable Lydia Seyram Hassan.

“since students are facing challenges, he should be able to use his social media handles that he used to criticise the former Member of Parliament, Hon. Lydia Seyram Hassan. Same way, but then this is the time that he should prove to us that, I mean, he cares about students. This is a student matter. This is not political matter.”
