The University of Ghana has officially suspended its random bed allocation exercise for the 2024/2025 academic year.
This decision comes as a result of the ongoing strike by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), which has severely disrupted several administrative services at the university, including hall registration and other student-related activities.
In a statement issued by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, the university acknowledged the impact of the strike and announced that the bed allocation process would remain on hold until further notice.
This suspension is expected to cause disruptions in residential arrangements for many students.
Speaking to UniversNews some students expressed mixed reactions to the announcement.
“I am so happy the random allocation has been postponed because, myself, I have not paid my school fees yet to be able to register for all these things. So we just thank God it has been postponed, and I just hope it will come by next year, maybe January. It should not come this year because we are not ready for school this time.”
“The randomization exercise is going to go a long way to help the students because the majority of them have not been able to pay their fees. The time frame given was too short for them to provide money for these fees and register their courses. Now that it has been postponed, I think they can meet the time and resource requirements and be better prepared.”
“They should have randomly allocated us before we went on vacation, just so we know where we will sleep before they are back. But here is the case, we are on vacation, and a date was set for the allocation, only for us to be told it has been postponed, which has affected the school reopening. It is not fair because some of us are prepared, and that’s not how things are done. There should be better planning.”
