The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has announced the rescheduling of its Emergency Congress following a disruption that occurred during the electoral process on September 24, 2024.
The election was rescheduled due to a disruption, reportedly caused by external interference, which led to a power outage at the voting center and compromised the integrity of the elections.
This announcement was made through a press statement signed by the NUGS President, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh.
The NUGS leadership expressed deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their participation and support during the Congress, which had been proceeding smoothly until the incident.
In consultation with key stakeholders, the decision was made to suspend the Congress to ensure the safety and protection of students.
However, following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), several key resolutions were made including
1. New Congress Date: The Emergency Congress has been rescheduled for October 19, 2024, at the Islamic University in Accra. The focus will be on completing the voting process and declaring the results.
2. Institutional Participation: Institutions are required to settle all financial obligations by October 11, 2024, in order to qualify for participation in the voting.
3. Delegate Submission: Leaders of delegations from compliant institutions must submit a countersigned delegate list by the same October 11 deadline.
4. Accredited Observers Only: Only accredited observers will be allowed entry on Election Day. Voting will be conducted using Student IDs that are linked to the verified delegate list.
5. Enhanced Security: Strict security measures will be in place to ensure order during the voting process. Unauthorized individuals will not be allowed on the premises.
The Electoral Commission is expected to release further details on the voting process in the coming days.
The NUGS leadership apologized for the inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.
