Some students of the University of Ghana have shared mixed reactions to the ongoing Ghana Card issuance for children aged 6 to 14 in the country.
This follows the National Identification Authority (NIA) announcing that Ghana Cards will be provided to children aged 6–14, starting October 6, 2025.
While some students believe the initiative will positively impact the nation, others emphasized its role in inclusivity and citizenship rights.
“I think this will have a very positive effect on the nation because kids with high intelligence will get access to certain facilities that would be beneficial to them,” one student noted.
Another highlighted the importance of inclusivity, stating: “Children at the age of six have the right to have the Ghana Card because they are also citizens of Ghana.”
A different student stressed the same point: “You cannot exclude them from being citizens of Ghana. It’s not right.”
Others argued that having a Ghana Card should be a fundamental right, just like having a birth certificate.
“It is okay for every Ghanaian to have a Ghana Card, whether the person is a newborn baby or not. The moment you’re born, it should be given to you like your birth certificate,” a student remarked.
