Some students of the University of Ghana have expressed mixed feelings about the ongoing strike, which has led to the postponement of the 2024/2025 academic year’s reopening.
While some see it as an opportunity to earn money for fees, others worry about academic disruptions and potential stranding on campus.
Speaking to UniversNews, some students explained that the strike’s impact on the academic calendar and its timing, coinciding with some students’ final year, raises concerns of potential stranding on campus.
“If the strike is for a good cause, it should continue. Only strikes seem to push this government to action. It’s an opportunity for students to earn money for fees and accommodation. However, if it’s not for a good cause, they shouldn’t strike.”
“The postponement will disturb students, especially those who’ve already traveled to campus and may be stranded. It will affect the academic calendar, potentially leading to a compressed semester. Hopefully, it will be resolved by next week.”
“I have mixed feelings. I’m sad because a similar strike delayed my entry into university in 2022, and now it might delay my graduation in 2025. It’s likely to cut into my long vacation starting in February. However, I’m happy it gives students more time to earn money for fees and personal expenses.”
“As a University of Ghana student nearing graduation, I was excited to be just months away from finishing my degree. However, the current campus situation has left me and my peers feeling distressed. Though I empathize with the staff’s circumstances, I earnestly appeal for them to return to work and help us students successfully complete our studies.”
The University of Ghana community hopes the the ongoing strike will be resolved amicably, allowing students to resume their studies without further delays and ensuring a smooth academic year.
