The University of Ghana’s management has organized a send-off party for its 368 retirees from the university community.

The annual event, which took place at the UG Sports Complex on 17th November, 2023 was aimed at commending the retirees for their hard work and dedication to serving the University Community with their resources and time.

In this year’s edition, the University management celebrated and awarded 368 retirees of the University from the years 2021 to 2023.

The event was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo; other notable figures like Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufman were in attendance at the party to grace the occasion.

Speaking to the audience and retirees at the event, the Vice chancellor expressed her heart-felt gratitude to the retirees for having dedicated their life and time to serving the University.

“… it is at the same time a bitter-sweet moment as we bid farewell to valued members of our university community. I noticed going through the list and even signing the certificates that some of you have dedicated most of your lives here. For some more than 40 years, they deserve some round of applauds.”

Also speaking at the event, the former leader of the Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and current University of Ghana Pensioners Association Chairman, Mr. Shine Gaveh took the opportunity to express his disappointment upon hearing the new structure of TEWU; it is currently divided into the Junior Staff Chapter and TEWU itself. He admonished the current heads of TEWU to review the new structure in consideration of its benefits.

“I just was sad when I heard that TEWU has been divided into two. We have Junior Staff…and TEWU. I think that we should go back and think seriously about this whether it will benefit all of us or not. Having been a leader of TEWU before, it breaks my heart to have that TEWU made up of mainly Junior staff to break into two. But this is what you have asked for…” he said.

Meanwhile, the retirees and audience at the event were given the benefit of wonderful performances from Dr. Kofi Antonio and his dance crew from the University’s Dance department alongside refreshment with some drinks and food.

At the tail-end of the program, all 368 retirees were awarded with hampers containing gifts along with citation plagues by the Vice-Chancellor and other dignitaries present. The event was marked with joy and reminisce, as the retirees introspected among each other over their years of service to the University.
