The Managing Director of the University of Ghana Information Technology Directorate, Engineer Francis Kwabena Boachie, has highlighted how limited digital literacy can affect students’ academic lives and professional prospects.
Speaking to Univers News, Engineer Boachie revealed that there are several university-led initiatives aimed at improving students’ digital skills at the University of Ghana.
“All the information every student needs can be accessed digitally. So if students don’t have the appreciation or experience to find and know how to access this information to empower themselves, they will be affected,” he stated.
“We teach students how to use computers and applications such as OfficeSuite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and even software for statistical analysis — all at no cost to the student,” he added.
He also emphasised the role of government in bridging the digital divide.
“Many students lack access to digital platforms due to limited internet infrastructure. Broadband internet is not widely available, especially outside urban areas, making affordability a significant concern. The government should take steps to empower students by improving internet access and affordability, regardless of their location,” he noted.
