UG: Highlights from Alumni Homecoming

It was a beautiful evening of merry-making, memories and catching up on old times as alumni of the University amassed at the Alumni Centre for the long-awaited Alumni Homecoming.

As part of activities to mark the year long 75th anniversary of the University, the Alumni Homecoming, organized on the 31st March, 2023, is one of the many events to mark the celebration .

The event started with a torch-light procession led by the University of Ghana Music Department.

The procession was thronged by a number of former students as well as admirers of the University singing and bearing torch lights as they paraded campus and finally to Alumni Centre where the main event was to hold.

Present at the event was the Chief of Staff of Ghana, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Registrar of the University of Ghana, Emelia Agyei Mensah, Members of the Alumni Council and Members of the UGis75 planning Committee.

The Ghana Police Service band were also present to serenade guests with melodious highlife tunes.

In an engagement with some alumni in attendance, they shared nostalgic experiences of their time as students and how things have evolved over the years.

“I entered the University in 1997 and graduated in 2000 as a [millenial], there was a lot of fun and it wasn’t easy to see even the Vice Chancellor, Professor Addai-Mensah and there were no congestions, we had access to room and we also organized hall week celebrations twice in a year,” an alumnus shared .

Some also shared their sentiments on coming back to what they called their roots.

They described the experience as surreal and expressed their wish for more similar events to be organized.

“It’s quite a very exciting one, it feels so surreal and feeling of coming back here is surreal and I wish we have these event more often.”
