Chairperson of the University of Ghana Governing Council and former Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong has urged graduating PhD students to go beyond academic achievement and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems.
Speaking as guest speaker at the first session of the July 2025 congregation held at the University’s Great Hall, Madam Brew emphasized the need for graduates to transform research into innovation that contributes meaningfully to national development.
”I urge you to find ways to translate your findings into practical solutions and engage with policymakers, community leaders, colleagues, entrepreneurs, investors, and fellow citizens to share your insights in accessible ways that can benefit society at large,” she said.
”Ghana and Africa need not only scholars but also innovators and entrepreneurs who can transform knowledge into economic opportunities. Therefore, I challenge you to consider how your expertise might contribute to addressing local challenges while creating value.”
She also encouraged graduands to embrace networking and collaboration as powerful tools for growth and impact.
”Whether through research and development in established organizations or launching your own businesses or ventures, you have the potential to be catalysts for constructive change. Remember the importance of collaboration and networking,” she said.
The congregation, which marked the start of the University’s July 2025 ceremonies, saw 107 PhD students from the School of Graduate Studies receive their degrees in the first session.
