President-elect John Mahama has officially been sworn in as the sixth President of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square, was presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Mahama, who won a decisive election victory on December 7, 2024, takes office for a second term. He joins the ranks of former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, and William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
This marks Mahama’s return to the presidency after previously serving as the Fourth President of the Fourth Republic.
Following the death of President Mills, Mahama assumed office, but lost his re-election bid to Akufo-Addo. He now makes history as the only sitting president to lose a re-election and return to office to complete his constitutionally mandated term.
Also making history during the ceremony was Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who was sworn in as Ghana’s first female Vice President. She took both the Oath of Allegiance and the Vice Presidential Oath before Mahama was sworn in.
