The Department of Computer Science has launched an ultramodern Cybersecurity Laboratory.
The Laboratory was furnished in collaboration with Virtual Infosec Africa. The launch, which took place on March 4 at the Department of Chemistry, was attended by dignitaries including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo; founder and CEO of Virtual Infosec Africa, Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere; Professor Ebenezer Owusu, Head of the Department of Computer Science; and other prominent figures.
Speaking at the launch, the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Professor Sandow Mark Yidana, highlighted the university’s ongoing efforts to introduce a Master of Science program in Cybersecurity.
“The Academic Board at the University of Ghana has granted approval to run a Master of Science program in Cybersecurity, and it is being considered for accreditation by GTEC,” he stated.
He further revealed that the Department of Computer Science offers short courses, which are accessible not only to students of the institution but also to the general public.
“Over 25 short courses are being run at the Department of Computer Science that will benefit from the infrastructure, and these short courses are available to individuals outside the institution.”
The CEO and founder of Virtual Infosec Africa, Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to empowering women in the tech industry by pledging to offer employment opportunities to the first 50 female students who enroll in the course.
“As part of our commitment, we’re offering the first 50 female students an income-generating skill in cybersecurity to increase female participation in the field,” he said.
The UGSRC Vice President, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, suggested that management, in collaboration with Virtual Infosec Africa, consider the establishment of a Computer Laboratory at the University of Ghana’s Accra City Campus to provide students with convenient access.
“I strongly propose that, in collaboration with university management and the SRC, Virtual Infosec Africa considers establishing an ultramodern computer lab at the Accra City Campus. This would provide students with access to the latest technology and foster an environment conducive to digital learning, as it may be difficult for the over 10,000 students at the Accra City Campus to come and access this facility here on the main campus,” he said.
