The University of Ghana SRC Electoral Commission (EC) has reiterated its dedication to overseeing a transparent and impartial election process, despite the ongoing legal challenges that have cast doubt on the fairness of the proceedings.
Concerns have been raised about the neutrality of the Commission, with allegations of bias surrounding its leadership. However, the Commission has firmly assured the student body that it remains committed to upholding the constitution and ensuring that the elections reflect the true will of the students.
In an interview with Univers News, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Electoral Commission, Mudasir Ibrahim Braimah, highlighted that the Commission’s actions are guided strictly by the constitution, as they have no interest in any of the candidates.
Mudasir explained that the Commission followed legal advice throughout the process and clarified that the disqualifications were based on advice from the SRC Legal Advisor and the Presidential Panel, and any subsequent rulings from the Appeals Board would be respected.
“We are not interested in who becomes the president or any other position. Our role is to follow the rules of the constitution and ensure that elections are conducted fairly. The lawyers interpret the law, but it’s ultimately up to the judiciary to decide. We simply followed the rules and applied them as they were outlined in the constitution.”
He also touched on the rumors regarding bias against the EC chairperson, stressing that these accusations were unfounded since the chairperson did not participate in the vetting process and reaffirmed that the Commission’s priority is to ensure the elections are conducted in accordance with the SRC Constitution and remain free from undue influence.
“We do not question the authority of the Appeals Board. As students and as members of the Electoral Commission, we abide by their rulings, even if some people raise concerns. The chairperson did not participate in the vetting panel, so claims of bias are baseless. We are focused solely on ensuring a transparent process.”
With the elections approaching, Mudasir assured students that the Electoral Commission is fully prepared to execute its mandate impartially and that the outcome of the election would genuinely reflect the will of the student body.
“As the Commission continues to navigate through these legal hurdles, the student body is hopeful for a smooth and fair election process under the guidance of the EC.”
