The School of Continuing and Distance Education at the University of Ghana has commenced a two-day conference to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Sakai Learning Management System (LMS).

The event highlights a decade of the open-source platform’s contribution to advancing digital education at the institution.

Over the past ten years, the Sakai LMS has become a staple in university education, significantly enhancing teaching and learning and evolving into an integral part of higher education delivery.

The conference has brought together international participants, faculty, policymakers, and students to deliberate on bold ideas and share experiences in using the Sakai LMS.

Speaking at the event, former Director of the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education at the University of Ghana and Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Sakai 10th Anniversary Conference, Professor Yaw Oheneba-Sakyi, highlighted the system’s impact and shared key lessons learned over the past decade.

He stressed that resilience is crucial, noting that the ability to adapt to challenges—such as the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic—is vital for success.

“These are essential tools for us, especially as we reflect on the COVID-19 crisis. The crisis underscored the importance of robust and reliable systems that can withstand disruptions and ensure educational continuity under any circumstances,” Prof. Oheneba-Sakyi said.

He further revealed that the Sakai LMS has set an ambitious plan to extend its reach beyond higher education.

According to him, the goal is to make the platform accessible to a wider range of learners and teachers by introducing it into basic and secondary schools.

“We seek to expand the digital revolution beyond the borders of our university. Our vision is to incorporate digital technologies fully into pre-tertiary institutions, equipping teachers and learners with the fundamental skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world,” he stated.

The conference serves as a forum for open discussion and the exchange of experiences and perspectives on digital learning. It brings together Sakai users, educators, and education technology enthusiasts to collaborate and inspire innovation in digital education.
