The University for Development Studies (UDS) from Ghana has sealed its place in history, becoming the first West African university to reach the semi-finals of the FISU University World Cup Football in China after a commanding 5–2 victory over South Korea’s Kyungil University.
The quarter-final clash in Dalian was a spectacle from start to finish. UDS took charge early, with Bibiani Goldstars forward Roland Frimpong opening the scoring in the 6th minute before Alhassan Zakaria doubled the lead just seven minutes later. Zakaria then produced a moment of magic in the 26th minute, curling home a stunning free-kick to make it 3–0.
Kyungil pulled one back in the 31st minute, but the Ghanaians refused to lose momentum. Frimpong struck again in the 52nd and completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute after a brilliant team move, putting UDS firmly in control. The Koreans managed a late goal, but it was never enough to deny UDS a place in the last four.
The result extends UDS’ fine scoring form in the competition — 12 goals netted and just 5 conceded — making them the tournament’s most prolific side so far.
Next up, UDS will face Spain’s University of Granada on Friday, September 26, 2025, after the Spaniards advanced with a 3–2 win over Croatia’s University of Split in their quarter-final. Kick-off is at 10:00 a.m. at the Training Centre Main in China.
This victory not only secures a semi-final berth but also writes a new chapter in African university football — one where UDS stands tall on the global stage.
