UBaSSA 2023: UCC Basic School emerges as the overall winners

The University of Cape Coast Basic School has emerged as the Overall winner for the Universities Basic School Sports Association (UBaSSA) Games.

The UBaSSA Games, which took place from the 1st of May to the 6th of May, 2023 saw some University Basic Schools compete in various disciplines of sports which include football and athletics.

The schools to compete for this year’s UBaSSA games included Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Basic School, University of Ghana (UG) Basic School, University of Cape Coast (UCC) Basic School, the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Basic School and the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) Basic School

The University of Ghana Basic School who hosted and were hoping to win this year’s UBaSSA games unfortunately lost to the University of Cape Coast Basic School.

This was the second time the school had hosted the games and had lost, the first time happening in 2019’s UBaSSA Games.

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) came in first place overall the games with six trophies, followed by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with three trophies. University of Ghana and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) tied for the third place with two trophies each.

Gideon Ofori of UG Basic School won as the Best Football Player for the Primary Boys category whilst Francisca Mensah from UMaT won Best Football player for the Primary Girls category.

Julia Borde Koafie of UCC Basic School and Bossman Kwesi Appiah of KNUST Basic School both won in the JHS category of Best Football Player for the girls and boys category respectively.

The UBaSSA Games is a sports competition among Universities Basic Schools in Ghana.

The games were organized by the University of Ghana this year to commemorate its 75th anniversary with the theme “Celebrating UG’S 75 years of Excellence and Nurturing Resilience through Sports.” Participants competed in athletics – that is both field and track events, football and table tennis for both Primary and Junior High School. The events concluded with a festive atmosphere and joyous celebrations from the participants.
