Former Senior Sports Coach at the University of Ghana, Elorm Amenakpor has asserted that the recent decline in sports in Ghana can be attributed to the neglect and deterioration of junior and senior high school sports.
In an exclusive interview with Universports, he emphasized that physical education (P.E.) teachers deserve recognition for their role in developing athletics, while also expressing concerns about the country’s sports development trajectory.
“The decline of high school sports is the decline of sports in Ghana because that is where we get the athletes from. We have to give credit to our Physical Education(PE) teachers for developing those athletes. In the last five years, there have been no regional games you know every two years basic and high schools go to regionals but in the last five years it never happened and nobody is talking about it. Meanwhile those are the schools that feed the universities which has led to the results we are getting right now” – Coach Elorm said on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the 2024 University of Ghana Inter Hall Athletics.
The 2024 Paris Olympics proved to be a disappointing outing for Ghana, as its athletes, including notable names like Benjamin Azamati, Rashid Sameenu, Joseph Paul Amoah, Rose Yeboah and Harry Stacey, failed to win a single medal or advance to the finals in their respective events.
