The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG) have officially suspended their ongoing strike, effective Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

This decision follows an emergency meeting held by the National Executive Council (NEC) of both associations Monday, October 14, 2024.

The strike, which began mid-September 2024, was called to address key grievances, including inadequate allowances such as the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and the Off-Campus Allowance. The industrial action severely disrupted university operations, particularly student services, across various campuses.

In the statement released, the NEC explained that the decision to suspend the strike was made after the government assured the associations that the VMA and Off-Campus Allowance would be paid. The government’s commitment to these payments, which had been longstanding demands, was a significant factor in calling off the strike.

“After our emergency meeting, we have decided to suspend the strike following the government’s assurance that the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and Off-Campus Allowance will be paid to all deserving members.”

The NEC also clarified that the suspension is not a complete end to the matter, as the unions will continue to engage with the government. The leadership emphasized that the suspension is conditional, with the unions expecting the government to address all remaining concerns related to the Condition of Service (CoS) of their members.

They added, “While the suspension is in good faith, it is important to note that this is conditional upon the government addressing all unresolved issues in the Condition of Service for our members.”

The leadership expressed cautious optimism, stating that although some progress has been made, they will closely monitor the government’s fulfillment of its promises. They emphasized that further action might be taken if these commitments are not met. Special attention will also be given to unresolved issues affecting workers at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC) and the University for Development Studies (UDS).

“This decision shows our commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution, but we urge all members to remain vigilant as we monitor the situation closely,” the statement added.

The associations reiterated their readiness to continue negotiations while encouraging their members to return to work with the assurance that the leadership remains committed to securing their full benefits.
