President John Dramani Mahama has changed the name of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sport and Recreation. On January 9, 2025, he made these changes under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L 327). This Executive instrument has decreased the number of ministries from 30 to 23. As a result, the Youth and Sports Ministry will now be known as the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, John Mahama emphasized the importance of renaming the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. He argued that the change is necessary because, over the years, the focus has been primarily on the Black Stars, neglecting the needs of the youth.

“we’re going to separate youth from sports because it’s a youth and sports ministry. But over the years, what we know is that the concentration is just on sports. And even on sports, the concentration is just on the black stars. My vision for this ministry will be that it will focus on mainstreaming youth interest in all sectors of the economy. But most of all, they will concentrate on rolling out strategies that will create jobs for young people.

The restructuring also includes the establishment of a separate Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, signaling a dedicated effort to address the unique needs and potential of the youth in the nation.

In the months ahead, attention will be focused on the newly restructured ministries as the yet to-be-known sports minister takes charge and begins to implement his or her strategies and policies.
